This painting is about the difficulty and pain of saying goodbye. When we left, we had to say goodbye to our families in secret and with fear. We were afraid that someone might find out about our departure and report us before we could leave. Even within families, people were afraid of being watched. The eyes in the painting represent this constant spying and surveillance. One person watched another, neighbors watched their neighbors, and trust between people was lost.
